Field Safety Seminar - Avalanche

This seminar is designed for staff, PhD candidates, and Master’s students who are conducting independent field projects or have responsibilities for others during fieldwork. The seminar provides a deeper understanding of avalanche safety

Course Objectives:

  • Develop  skills in planning safe travel in avalanche-prone areas
  • Understand risk factors related to avalanche terrain, snow conditions, and weather patterns
  • Practice identifying avalanche hazards and making informed decisions in the field

Course Content:

  • Risk Assessment: Identifying avalanche-prone terrain, evaluating snowpack stability, and assessing weather-related risks
  • Safe Travel Planning: Strategies for route selection, group management, and emergency preparedness
  • Operational Procedures: Best practices for traveling safely in avalanche terrain
  • Emergency Response: Introduction to basic rescue techniques and decision-making during critical situations

Practical Component:
The seminar includes a snowmobile excursion to  areas near Longyearbyen. Participants will engage in hands-on exercises to assess terrain, discuss risk scenarios, and apply operational procedures in real conditions.

Prerequisites:
Participants must have completed the basic field safety course (e.g., AS-101) prior to attending, as this seminar builds on foundational knowledge.
