Field Safety Seminar - Sea Ice

This seminar is designed for staff, PhD candidates, and Master’s students who are conducting independent field projects or have responsibilities for others during fieldwork. The seminar provides a deeper understanding of sea ice safety, building on knowledge from basic safety courses.

Course Objectives:

  • Develop advanced skills in planning safe travel on sea ice
  • Understand risk factors related to sea ice conditions
  • Practice operational and emergency procedures in the field

Course Content:

  • Risk Assessment: Identifying and evaluating hazards related to sea ice
  • Safe Travel Planning: Strategies for route selection, weather considerations, and ice conditions
  • Operational Procedures: Best practices for group management on sea ice
  • Emergency Response: Practical exercises focusing on incident management and rescue techniques

Practical Component:
The seminar includes an excursion with snowmobiles on sea ice, where participants will apply operational routines and practice emergency procedures

Prerequisites:
Participants must have completed a basic safety course (e.g., AS-101) prior to attending, as the seminar builds on foundational knowledge.
